7/30 - A drum line in a boxing ring
Tuesday’s Newsletter: the late summer parties have begun plus nail trends and asparagus candles
On Saturday, I took my friend, Hannah, to the launch party of Matt Starr and Dream Baby Press’ first ever book: Mouthful. It’s an endearing collection of poems and the evening mirrored its unique love language: controlled chaos and hard-won joy.
It took place at Church Ave boxing in Tribeca, 2 floors underground, with a barely functioning AC, and banana split ice cream. There was a drum line, Joan of Arca read a Christian-afied Harry Potter fanfic, Jemima Kirke shared a letter about Matt, and Ena (park_slope_arsonist) directed the crowd in a game of “fight, sue, therapy” where we handed out sentences for real life bad date behavior.
A while it was certainly buzzy, Drake even publicly commented on the Drake impersonator that performed, at the heart of the entire evening was the idea of taking shame and turning it into joy. One of my favorite parts about the writing process is by writing about your own pain and fears, you can help others feel a little less alone. There’s a community in words and books and poems. It’s ambitious to take on shame and still find levity, but Matt’s new book navigates those waters with ease. 🩷

It’s not news that freaky nails are in; they go hand in hand with nihilistic tattoos and brat summer. Nylon mag interview Mei, a nail artist in NYC and she discusses five trends she’s seeing right now. Think 3D shapes and piercings 😈

There’s nothing like an incredibly unserious conversation with and internet persona. I enjoyed reading the casual banter between this couple that’s made several appearances on my FYP.
Levi Coralynn and William Conrad create content that feels equally avant garde, sexual, and 100% a bit. William makes intricate dishes for Levi and Levi delicately asks about the ingredients while looking straight into the camera. The role reversal is hard to miss, especially with current dustup around other tradwife creators.
Let this quick read be your bite-sized, pop culture snack for the day.
